PRESS RELEASE

Scalable SPM array for large area detection builds on sensL's established low light detection technology

The industries first four side scalable low light detecting silicon photomultiplier array is released for use in markets such as Medical Imaging, Homeland Security Radiation Detection, Analytical Instruments and High Energy Physics. This product builds on the proven low light detector from sensL which is rapidly becoming the new standard for solid-state low light detection.

Solid-state silicon photomultiplier technology is replacing the vacuum tube based photomultiplier tube, or PMT, in many miniature applications. Challenges have existed in creating large arrays of solid-state low light detectors due to the connections which were needed to the outside world. The four side scalable low light detector solves the problems faced with scaling silicon photomultiplier technology to very large areas. This is a key requirement for the adoption of solid-state low light detector technology in many markets which are currently served by the PMT.

The small form factor makes the sensL SPMArray ideal for weight and space constrained hand-held radiation detection and identification systems for Homeland Security and for simpler and more compact PET and SPECT ring assembly in Medical Imaging applications. Additionally sensL has developed the packaging to allow adoption of the technology by customers who operate low light detectors in magnetic fields. The unique package used in the SPMArray is not impacted by large magnetic fields and is designed to be magnetic compatible up to 3 Tesla.

‘We are very happy with the launch of the new SPMArray package. This gives sensL the opportunity to take advantage of the high uniformity which we have brought into our manufacturing process. What good is having the industries most uniform and stable detector if our customers can't use it in large area applications?’ remarked CTO, Dr. Carl Jackson.

The SPMArray has been designed for high performance and flexibility and sensL offers the SPMArray with a full range of readout and evaluation boards designed to suit customer applications and rapid prototyping.

‘The addition of this new packaging option builds on the proven detector performance and provides additional capabilities to our customers,’ Jackson concludes.

About sensL

Working with their customers, sensL identifies, designs and delivers low light detection solutions which solve customer problems and add value. They aim to be partner of choice because of their flexibility, capabilities and the desire to meet their customer needs.

Solid state detectors are the future in low light sensing

The performance of sensL's solid-state detectors surpasses current standard detectors such as the photomultiplier tube (PMT), the avalanche photodiode (APD) and PIN photodiode detectors. In addition the gain and uniformity that sensL can achieve with its low light sensing detectors allow multiple element detectors are unsurpassed in the marketplace. sensL's range of detector technologies covering both analog and digital Photon Counting are designed to suit the current and emerging market for low light sensors. At the core of every sensL detector is a low light sensing silicon photodiode that is capable of converting low light signals into a measurable output signal. To get the most from the capabilities of these lowlight sensing detectors, sensL provides a full range of data acquisition and signal processing capabilities which allow customers to rapidly integrated full detector and data acquisition solutions into their products.

sensL provides a full range of detector, sub-system and system level expertise to work with its customers in Analytical Instruments, Homeland Security, Nuclear Medicine and Industrial applications.
