Polarization Dependent Loss Emulators

Sept. 28, 2021
OZ Optics produces a Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) Emulator. The emulator produces a specific amount of polarization dependent loss by transmitting the light through the device.

Motor Driven Polarization Dependent Loss Emulator - OEM

OZ Opticsʼ motor driven polarization dependent loss emulator (PDLE) is an OEM module that comes with a built-in stepper motor, optical block and control firmware. The device allows the user to set, with high precision, a desired PDL artifact value within a 0.1 dB to 20 dB dynamic range, using the remote control interface commands. The motor driven PDLE features low insertion loss and low polarization mode dispersion (PMD) over a broad operating wavelength range. The standard model is optimized for C/L Band optical signals, covering 1520 nm to 1610 nm. By controlling and accurately manipulating the state of polarization (SOP) inside the device, one can generate variable PDL from 0.1 dB to 20 dB (higher PDL values available on request), with fine resolution.

The PDLE is useful to emulate PDL effects due to passive/active optical devices in an optical link, such as attenuators, modulators, array waveguides, fiber Bragg gratings, switches, fused couplers, etc. The PDLE enables physical emulation of the PDL in an optical system to quantity available PDL budget margins. The PDLE coupled with other OZ Optics products such as a polarization dependent loss meter, a polarized stable source, or a polarization controller, can significantly assist in defining and quantifying polarization dependent losses in an optical system.

Multi-Channel Benchtop Polarization Dependent Loss Emulator

OZ Optics offers a turnkey, rugged and low cost benchtop digital multichannel polarization dependent loss emulator (PDLE) with high resolution, and high dynamic range. The built-in motor controlled PDLE units have low insertion loss, low backreflection, low PMD and flat wavelength response. This system can be configured with up to 4 individual motor driven PDLE in a benchtop unit and up to 16 channels in a full rack mount unit. The system comes with a color touch screen in the front panel and with a USB interface on the back panel.

The PDLE is useful to emulate PDL effects due to passive/active optical devices in an optical link, such as attenuators, modulators, array waveguides, fiber Bragg gratings, switches, fused couplers, etc. The PDLE enables physical emulation of the PDL in an optical system to quantify available PDL budget margins.

The benchtop PDLE coupled with other OZ Optics products such as a motorized variable attenuator, an optical switch, a polarization dependent loss meter, a polarized stable source, or a polarization controller, can significantly assist in defining and quantifying polarization dependent losses and other fiber impairments in fiber-optic networks.

Polarization Dependent Loss Emulator

OZ Optics produces a Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) Emulator. The emulator produces a specific amount of polarization dependent loss by transmitting the light through the device. The orthogonal polarizations will have different transmission properties resulting in PDL effect. Emulators are available with either a fixed PDL (between 0.05 and 10dB) or a variable PDL(between 0.05 and 10dB).

The PDL emulator is used to simulate the PDL behavior of a passive component within an optical link. This includes devices like variable optical attenuators, optical modulators, array waveguides, fiber Bragg gratings, optical switches or fused couplers. One can thus examine the effects of PDL in a system, and work out a PDL budget for an optical link. OZ Optics also produces a polarization dependent loss meter, polarized stable sources, and polarization controllers, to further help study the effect of polarization in optical systems.
