Nanopositioning specialist PI acquires granite base machining company PGW

The acquisition will provide granite plates with high flatness and system integration capabilities for PI’s nanopositioning solutions used in the semiconductor, life sciences, photonics, and industrial automation markets.

PI (Physik Instrumente; Karlsruhe, Germany) has acquired PGW Precision Granite (Gifu, Japan), a transaction that was finalized on February 25, 2021 and is a major step forward in the company’s expansion plan of a PI Design Center in Asia. This builds upon PI’s growth in 2020 when the company opened a production plant in Changzhou, China.

Granite has unique thermal and vibration-damping properties and is employed in many of PI’s multiaxis air bearing and gantry systems. PGW’s highly accurate competencies with machined granite base plates are a good fit with PI’s corporate strategy of establishing a global network of PI Design Centers. Assembly of complete precision motion control systems at PGW is also planned for the future.

With the acquisition, PI is strengthening its commitment to the growth markets in Asia, says Markus Spanner, CEO of PI. PGW’s existing management team will be integrated into the new management structure.
