PRESS RELEASE

BAYSPEC SHIPS INDUSTRY'S FIRST 532nm RAMAN HANDHELD

Provides a cost effective way of non-destructive measurement for portable field applications, such as: gemstone analysis and validation, minerals and rocks, with easy adaptations for gas or liquid samples.

FREMONT, CA- BaySpec, Inc., a leader in affordable spectral engines for the portable market, today announced it has shipped the first of its kind Handheld 532 nm Raman Analyzer.

The Xantus-1G-0532 features no moving parts, ruggedized packaging, on-board full functional computer, and rechargeable/replaceable lithium ion battery. An integrated 532 nm laser excites the sample at the point of measurement, while the highly efficient Volume Phase Grating-based spectrograph disperses the spectra onto a highly sensitive CCD array for digital output to the host.

BaySpec's Micro2020 Windows-based software is included with an intuitive, streamlined user interface and can output data in .txt, .csv, or .spc format. Baseline correction function is intelligently built-in, which greatly facilitates reduction in fluorescence interference while accounting for drift in background. The Xantus-1 can transmit data to centralized facilities via WiFi networks or Bluetooth 2.0.

All Solid-State/ No Sample Preperation

For mineral identifiction, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy are labor intensive and time consuming, and not practible for field applications. On the other hand, Raman spectroscopy does not require destructive sampling or elaborate sample preperation. It shoots a laser beam at the sample. The laser excites atoms within the sample, which then emit a very weak light of a wavelength in a pattern characteristic of the material. A spectral "fingerprint" is collected, and spectral analysis performed to identify the unknown substance.

For the first time, a highly compact, ruggedized, cost-effective 532 nm Raman Analyzer is available for portable field use.
