Lumetrics garners close to $1M grant to fund R&D of handheld eye scanner

Lumetrics has obtained a $973,000 research and development (R&D) grant from the National Institutes of Health – National Eye Institute to fund development of a digital handheld diagnostic ophthalmic instrument.

Lumetrics (Rochester, NY) has obtained a $973,000 research and development (R&D) grant from the National Institutes of Health – National Eye Institute (NIH - NEI; Bethesda, MD). The grant will fund development of a digital handheld diagnostic ophthalmic instrument—measuring about the size of a pen—that could dramatically improve access to vision-related healthcare worldwide. Specifically, the device will provide an effective clinical tool for imaging the human retina and documenting the findings.

The development of the new camera has been led by Fillip Ignatovich, Ph.D., Lumetrics' CTO, and David Kleinman, MD, MBA, an academic retinal specialist at the Flaum Eye Institute (also in Rochester). The camera is made possible through a key patent invented by Steven Feldon, MD, MBA, director of the Flaum Eye Institute, and Geunyoung Yoon, Ph.D., of the University of Rochester, both of whom will be assisting on aspects of the project.

Ignatovich is an expert in developing innovative strategies to leverage technology in improving the human condition. He defines and oversees the research and development efforts at Lumetrics, with emphasis on medical ophthalmic devices.
