Denton Vacuum acquires Isoflux's cylindrical cathode portfolio

June 10, 2020
The purchase includes equipment intellectual property and patents on the cylindrical cathode, and process patents for its application to several biomedical applications.

Thin-film coatings specialist Denton Vacuum (Moorestown, NJ) has purchased the assets of Isoflux (Pittsford, NY) relating to its cylindrical cathode technology. This includes both equipment intellectual property and patents on the cylindrical cathode, and process patents for its application to several biomedical applications.

Denton Vacuum sees demand for extremely uniform, dense films on a wide variety of highly curved surfaces like medical implants, and this will augment the technology capability of its Discovery sputtering platform, says Frank Cumbo, president and CEO. By integrating the Isoflux cylindrical cathode onto the Discovery 200 module, the company is able to provide a highly reliable, turnkey coating solution for these applications, he adds.

The company also has particular interest in the ability to apply highly uniform metal and dielectric films to curved optics without the use of masks or shapers, says Dr. David Douglass, senior product manager. This could improve cost of ownership and yield, potentially opening up new applications requiring optical filters on curved substrates.
