Many functions in the brain remain a mystery, despite the strides biomedical research has made. Now, a new microscopy technique is allowing a team in New York to better understand some of the brain’s intricacies by simultaneously recording thousands of neurons.

An entire precision timing system the size of a digital memory card? It’s possible thanks to work at the National Institutes of Standards and Technology that could revolutionize how light and microwaves are harnessed for practical applications.

A novel device developed by a team in Chicago is advancing treatment of arrythmias. The minimally invasive pacemaker that’s controlled by light can be implanted to regulate cardiovascular or neural activity.
