VI Systems unveils a circular VCSEL chip array for sensing applications

The multimode laser emitter can be combined with a multicore fiber developed by InPhoTech for fiber sensing.

Laser and photonic components maker VI Systems (Berlin, Germany) has unveiled a circular 850-nm-emitting multimode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chip array with six emitters, providing 3.5 mW of continuous-wave (CW) optical output power per channel (total output power is 21 mW). The VCSELs are positioned on a circle with a diameter of 78 um, and each VCSEL channel is individually addressable from top contacts. The chip-size footprint is 750 x 500 µm.

For fiber-sensor applications, the VCSEL emitters can be coupled into a multicore fiber developed by the company InPhoTech (Warsaw, Poland) and tailored for the VCSEL array.

InPhoTech will exhibit the device at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) in booth #373 from Sep 24 – 26, 2018 in Rome, Italy. VI Systems will exhibit the device in booth #4580 at the SPIE Photonics West conference and exhibition from Feb 5-7, 2019 in San Francisco, CA.
