A thin-film optical coating process meets the challenges associated with coating nonsymmetrical freeform optics made from metal substrates, including lidar spinners, off-axis mirrors, parabolas, and polygons. Dielectric protective coatings may be added to extend the life of the optics. Substrate sizes from 5 mm to 600 mm are coated by leveraging the company’s customized and adjustable in-house tooling for optic substrates, allowing for a reduction in nonrecurring engineering and tooling costs and shortened lead times.
