PAWS, an integrated photonics spectrograph on-a-chip prototype during integration with a cryogenically cooled Teledyne H2RG infrared array in the innoFSPEC lab. The arrayed waveguide grating (inset) delivers a spectral resolution of R=15.000 in the astronomical H band (1.55 µm) with unprecedented efficiency. The chip was designed at innoFSPEC and manufactured by Enablence (U.S.). Innovative spectrographs of this kind for future space missions hold the promise of significant savings in mass and volume, when comparing, e.g., with the 196 kg heavy NIRSpec instrument onboard of James Webb Space Telescope.
