BaySpec Introduces Next Generation FirstGuardTM Handheld Raman Analyzers

SAN JOSE, CA--(July 15, 2011) - BaySpec, Inc., a world leader in handheld spectral devices for small and large molecular chemical identification and analysis, announces the introduction of its next-generation FirstGuardTM, the world’s first multi-wavelength handheld Raman analyzer. Building on the success of the XantusTM and first generation FirstGuardTM models our unique features and benefits include:

  • First Raman platform in the world to offer 532, 785 or 1064 nm excitation wavelengths
  • High power ~490mW narrowband laser (on 785 and 1064nm units; ~50mW for 532nm)
  • Utilizes BaySpec’s proprietary high throughput Volume Phase Grating (VPG)TM technology
  • Optimally cooled detector arrays for low light sensitivity
  • Ruggedized handheld packaging
  • Single trigger activation
  • Integrated vial holder or direct point-and-shoot
  • Barcode scanner or RFID reader with batch reporting and print functions
  • Extended long-life 5 hour rechargeable battery
  • Powerful easy to use Micro2020TM 21 CRF Part 11 compliant analysis software
  • Weighs less than 5 lbs (2.3kg)
  • Qualification documentation and standard operating procedures available
  • Extended service, support and warranty programs available

The FirstGuardTM greatly reduces analysis costs and overall overhead. As no contact or sample preparation is needed, materials can be analyzed through plastic bags, blister packs, glass containers or plastic drums improving worker safety from exposure to hazardous chemicals during inspection. A fleet of instruments can be cloned with the same identification methods with excellent instrument-instrument repeatability and reliability.

The FirstGuardTM platform offers users a choice of excitation wavelength: 532, 785 or 1064nm allowing the user to measure difficult real-world samples where other instruments fail. Depending on the nature of your sample, you may choose 532nm excitation for its high sensitivity or 1064nm excitation to suppress fluorescence or 785nm to address both concerns. Many materials show significant light induced fluorescence when Raman spectrometers with 532nm or 785nm excitation wavelengths are used. The fluorescence interference in “real-world” samples are typically orders of magnitude higher than the useful Raman signal. BaySpec’s new long-wavelength 1064nm Raman spectral engines are capable of overcoming this fluorescence interference enabling the practical application of Raman technology in the field.

For the first time in analytical instrumentation history, a ruggedized, handheld, dispersive multi-wavelength Raman analytical instrument is available for measuring real-world samples. This new handheld instrument provides great potential for rapid, direct, on-site Raman analysis. Applications include food safety, homeland security, forensics, narcotics investigation, law enforcement, military & defense, chemical, biochemical, solar energy, plastics recycling, gemstones, anti-counterfeiting and pharmaceutical/ neutraceutical incoming raw material identification, et al.
