OFS Announces Highly Non-linear Fiber
Improves Nonlinear Efficiency

Anaheim, California - OFS, a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of innovative fiber optic network products, today announced the launch of a new highly nonlinear fiber ("HNLF") with stable phase-matching for improved nonlinear efficiency ("HNLF-SPINE"). The new HNLF combines a high non-linear coefficient with a zero dispersion wavelength that is ultra-stable along the fiber length making it especially well-suited for application in parametric amplifiers and related devices.

"The HNLF-SPINE provides enhanced parametric processes with extended operating bandwidth and high power conversion efficiency," says David DiGiovanni, Chief Technology Officer for OFS. "Ultra-stable zero dispersion wavelength has been achieved using a new type of fiber design, which has drastically minimized the normally high sensitivity of HNLF dispersion to small perturbations of the fiber dimensions," he adds.

Fiber variations impose the most important limitation on many nonlinear fiber systems, as demonstrated in many results from Professor Stojan Radic's group at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). This work predicted dramatically improved performance if a fiber with enhanced phase-matching stability could be achieved. Confirming this prediction, the OFS HNLF-SPINE demonstrated a 2.5 times improvement in the power conversion efficiency of a short, infrared-band parametric oscillator in a paper published by UCSD and OFS in Optics Express in August 2012.

"The HNLF-SPINE is a nice extension of our already broad product offering within highly nonlinear fibers," says Bera Pálsdóttir, Manager of Incubation Center OFS Denmark.
